Painting a Concrete Patio: A Step-by-Step Guide
Are you a garden guru? Do you love to grill and entertain outdoors? Whether you’re looking to boost your curb appeal or trying to take a drab and boring concrete patio into your outdoor oasis, not to worry. Benjamin Moore Floor and Patio Paint can transform your patio into a quaint courtyard ready for guests and good times.

At Supershade South, we have everything you need to properly prepare and paint your patio to perfection. It’s really easier than you think. When the job is complete, bring out those potted plants and fire up the grill. But, before you begin any outdoor painting project, be sure the forecast calls for sun. Follow the steps below to give your patio the fresh new look it needs.
Step One: Selecting Products from Benjamin Moore
Paint adheres best to a properly primed surface, especially to porous surfaces such as a patio. Supershade South carries a variety of Benjamin Moore primers so it’s important to select the right one for prepping an outdoor surface—our team can help you select the best choice for your treated or untreated wood, concrete, or other patios.
One option we recommend, Benjamin Moore Floor and Patio, is a latex paint that comes in two different sheens: Low Sheen and High Gloss. If your patio surface is damaged, a low sheen is the best choice as it will not bring attention to the imperfections. If your patio is relatively unscathed but still needs a facelift, then a High Gloss will add a luxe beauty to your outdoor living area.
Benjamin Moore Floor and Patio Paint come in a rainbow of colors. Since patios get a lot of wear and tear, select a darker hue. Deep reds, greens, greys, and browns always work well as a stage for your garden area. Colors range from Brick Red to Perfectly Pesto to Iron Mountain to Toasted Chestnut, and more.
Another one of the most important steps when painting a concrete surface is sealing. Sealing will prolong the life of the paint and luster. Here at Supershade South, our paint experts can help you select the right specialty coatings and sealer for your patio project to extend the quality of the finish and the longevity of your project.
Step Two: Gather Your Materials
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Benjamin Moore Paint, Primer, Sealer, recommended by Supershade South
- Painting Tray
- Painting Roller (3)
- Roller Extension Pole
- Concrete Filler
- Yard Brush
- Bucket
- Rags
- Patio Cleaner
- Putty knife
- Power Washer, optional
Using the proper tools will help you complete your project like a professional.
Step Three: Wash Your Patio
If your patio isn’t debris-free, the primer and paint will not adhere well. If you don’t have a power washer, you can easily rent one, but elbow grease will do the job. Mix the patio cleaner according to the directions. Saturate your patio and use a yard brush to briskly scrub the patio, loosening all the dirt. No need to worry about stains—the primer will mask those. With power washer, spray the surface clean of soap and residue. Before you move on to the next step of filling the cracks, the patio must be completely dry.
Step Four: Repair Any Cracks
Use a pre-mixed concrete filler to repair cracks and crevices on the surface of your patio. With a large putty knife or trowel, simply apply the filler as evenly and as parallel to the surface as possible. Most pre-mixed fillers usually take at least 2 to 3 hours to dry. So be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions and allow for proper drying time before you begin to apply the primer.
Step Five: Prime, Paint, and Seal
Now comes the easy part: Mix and pour your Benjamin Moore primer for concrete patios into a paint tray and saturate your brush or roller. Distribute the primer as evenly as possible, making sure the entire surface is covered. Depending on the quality of your surface, a second coat is advisable. Wait until dry.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for best practices, and likewise for the paint and sealants. Two coats of primer, paint, and sealer will ensure that any discoloration won’t bleed through, and the product will maintain its best durability. Always remember to let each coat dry, before applying the next.
Step Six: Enjoy Your New Patio Space
Now, it’s time to have some fun! Plant those geraniums, order that new umbrella, pour some lemonade, and curl up in the sun with your favorite book.
